Northland College Winds to perform Traditions of Faith and Spirit concert
December 5, 2011
The Northland College Winds will present an evening of songs and hymns for the Christmas season on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvord Theatre at Northland College. The event, another offering in the Northland College Community Connections series, is free and open to the public.
Transcriptions and adaptations from a number of rich vocal music traditions will be performed. The Northland College Winds will also play selections from George Frideric Handel's "Messiah."
"The common thread among this varied mix is the way in which all of these works for the human voice have been beautifully translated into the wordless language of musical instruments by each of these composers or arrangers," says Joel Glickman, Music Director at Northland. "This year's Northland College Winds is a group of about two dozen unusually adept and sensitive musicians with whom it is my joy to conduct and rehearse."
David Saetre, Campus Minister at Northland, will contribute his reflections during the concert, as well as selections of poetry based on the compositions and the season.
"The meditations are meant to complement the music, inviting the audience to experience these extraordinary compositions with a depth of feeling and evoking that rich sense of wonder that is really at the heart of faith - all faiths," says Saetre.
The program has been selected and designed to put Northland's unique stamp on the traditional holiday season concert.
