Visiting artist, performance at Northland College
November 3, 2008
International artist, teacher and lecturer Rolf Westphal is currently serving as an artist-in-residence at Northland College and will lead a group of students in an art performance on Thursday, November 6.
The event will be held on the Campus Mall in front of the Ponzio Campus Center beginning at 8 p.m. The event is open to the public free of charge. Westphal’s visit and the performance are sponsored by Art League and the Art Department at Northland College. There will be a reception with food and refreshments held after the performance.
“It's really exciting working with an artist that has traveled so much of the world doing what he loves,” says Calvin Stalvig, a senior at Northland College and president of the Art League. “He has brought a fresh artistic perspective here to our program.”
Westphal, a resident of Rainy Lake, Minn., has been on campus since October 8 working with students to create the performance. The final product of their work will not be unveiled until the night of the event, but Westphal says the piece will include the use of light and sound after dark.
A prolific sculptor and former Frederick Layton Distinguished Chair in Sculpture at Lawrence University, Westphal has created major outdoor installations in 12 countries around the world including Russia, Finland, Sweden and Turkey. He has also lectured, exhibited and performed in more than 20 nations. He has travelled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and the Eastern Bloc and speaks Spanish and German fluently.
Art League is a student organization at Northland that works to foster a support an artistic environment on campus and in the great Chequamegon Bay community.
