Northland College hosts student art show and Holiday Art Bazaar
November 29, 2011
Northland College will feature the best talents of student and Chequamegon Bay area artists with two back-to-back events this holiday season. A reception will be held for a student art show on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Mary VanEvera Visual Arts Center on campus. The following day, Northland will host a Holiday Art Bazaar in the Ponzio Campus Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. Both events, offerings in the Northland College Community Connections series, are free and open to the public.
More than 50 Northland art students will exhibit a variety of work ranging from ceramics, photographs and more at the reception on Thursday, Dec. 8. Food and drink will also be provided. Students exhibit their work for public display each semester. The artwork will serve as a visual culmination of the students' 14 weeks of study.
"As a faculty member, it's nice to see all the students' work pay off in the form of an exhibition," says Jason Terry, Associate Professor of Art. "There's no other substitute. There is nothing in a book or lecture that will prepare a person for what they learn from this experience."
Northland College students will also have an opportunity to network with experienced community artists at the Holiday Art Bazaar on Friday, Dec. 9. The bazaar, coordinated by the Northland College Student Art League, is expected to draw 15 to 20 vendors displayingitems for sale. All proceeds from purchases support student and local artists. Items for sale include Christmas ornaments, knitted items and more.
"The bazaar gives students, faculty, staff and community members a chance to buy local presents for their loved ones for the holiday season and it gives local vendors a venue to sell their art," says Mary Schaubschlager, student coordinator of the Holiday Art Bazaar. "It's held during that perfect panic time period where everyone is returning home for the holidays and thinking, 'I have nothing for my family.'"
Event organizers are seeking additional artists who may be interested in participating in the art bazaar. The deadline to respond is Thursday, Dec. 1. Those seeking more information should call Mary Schaubschlager at (612) 321-6550 or email her at schaubschlagerm01@myemail.northland.edu.
