Northland College Jazz Band presents Hot Tunes for a Chilly Night
November 23, 2011
The Northland College Jazz Band will perform the informal, cabaret-style concert "Hot Tunes for a Chilly Night" on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvord Theatre at Northland College. Attendees may relax and enjoy the music or shake a tail feather on the dance floor. The event, another offering in the Northland College Community Connections series, is free and open to the public.
"We will present a couple of sets of concert big band jazz in the Alvord Theatre but leave some space for dancing for those who would rather not sit still while interacting with the particular kind of energy that jazz music puts forth," says Joel Glickman, Professor of Music at Northland. "We will stay with this format until such time as a ground swell of public opinion tells us to 'get serious' or 'go more formal.' The world of concert jazz, even at its most hip and subtle, rarely turns its back on the styles and energy of dance."
The concert will feature songs ranging in style from Cuban to Swing, such as "Sing Sing Sing" with Dag Bystrom on drums. Bystrom has been the jazz band's rhythm section mainstay and power source since the 1980s. The performance will also highlight other soloists on the program, including trumpeters Matt Kniclebine and Howard Frostman, trombonists Trevor Thornton and Conor Stibbe, and lead tenor saxophonist Will Hansen. The Northland College Jazz Band includes members from the college and community.
