Print This! exhibit at Northland features work from Parsonage Fund recipients
September 28, 2011
Five Northland College students will display their print artwork in the Print This! exhibit at the Mary Van Evera Visual Arts Center beginning Thursday, Sept. 29. A reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will feature artwork from students Mary Schaubschlager, Emily Schlager, Signe Seaborg, Madeline Weibel and Lissy Hume. Various print forms will be on display, including woodcuts, screen prints and more. The exhibit runs through Nov. 1.Parsonage funding allowed the five students to travel to St. Louis, Missouri, this past March to attend the Southern Graphics Council International Conference, which promotes education about fine art printmaking. Artists from across the nation attended the conference, as well as printmakers from South America, Canada and Europe.
"This is our way of giving back to the community by showing their prints," says Jason Terry, Associate Professor of Art at Northland College. "It's a way to show off the research that the students are doing."
The Parsonage Fund aids students with their personal and professional development. The fund has financed capstone projects and research, presentations at and participation in professional conferences, creation of community service projects, trips and more.
"Students are very excited about printmaking and to show off what they've done," says Terry. "This is part of their training in art and having that confidence to show their work and invite critiques from the public is very important for the students, as well as the audience."
Robert Parsonage, 10th president of Northland College (1987-2002), adopted the ideal of being a "servant leader." The Parsonage Fund was set up in part to honor his service to the college community and connect students' visions to community service. Robert Parsonage sought to encourage students' imagination and prepare them in becoming citizen-leaders of the future. The Parsonage Fund has supported more than 775 students since its inception in 2002-2003, awarding more than $265,000.
