Local journalist to head Northland College radio station WRNC
July 26, 2011
Northland College has hired writer and radio news reporter Danielle Kaeding to manage its low-power community radio station, 97.7 WRNC FM. Formerly a reporter for the Ashland Daily Press and Wisconsin Public Radio, Kaeding will oversee the daily operations of the campus radio station. She will also act as a communications specialist in the College Communications Office.
“I am excited to join the college as station manager of WRNC,” Kaeding said. “There are changes ahead for the radio station, and I feel grateful to continue to serve the Ashland community as a part of the Northland College staff.”
Northland College is pursuing an opportunity to expand the coverage of WRNC through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC tentatively awarded a construction permit to WRNC earlier this year, which would allow the station to increase its broadcast strength.
“Right now, WRNC is broadcasting at 100 watts and covers nearly a 25-mile radius around the college,” said Kaeding. “The radio station may be able to broadcast a signal 60 times more powerful and reach more listeners.”
Kaeding studied Mass Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Superior where she began working for 91.3 KUWS FM, a Wisconsin Public Radio affiliate. Her stories have aired statewide on Wisconsin Public Radio, as well as on National Native News. A four-time Wisconsin Associated Press Award winner, Kaeding has also written stories for Minnesota Sea Grant, the Superior Evening Telegram, the Ashland Daily Press and Business North. In addition, she operated the Chequamegon Bay news website, the Gitche Gumee Gamut. Kaeding replaces WRNC station manager Ed Morales, who is leaving Northland to pursue a graduate degree in social work at the University of Minnesota.
