New endowment benefits Northland athletic fields, Ashland community
April 13, 2011
On Friday, April 8 Northland College President Michael A. Miller was joined by friends and family of Francis and Helen Hicks to formally establish the Francis and Helen Hicks Family Endowment Fund.
"The Francis and Helen Hicks Endowment Fund is an excellent model for how we can build more relationships with the Ashland public schools and the greater Ashland community," says Miller. "These are the kinds of ways we want to strengthen the college, to serve the community and to be more engaged."
The purpose of the fund is to provide support for the maintenance and improvement of the Northland College athletic fields, which are used by Northland, Ashland High School, and the Ashland community at large. Income generated from the fund will be used to support the maintenance of the athletic fields in perpetuity.
Recommendations for the specific use of the funds will be made by the "Friends of the Fields," a partnership between Northland College, the Ashland School District, the Northland College Alumni Association, and the city of Ashland to maintain the Northland College baseball and softball fields, and to encourage their use by the Chequamegon Bay community.
"This endowment demonstrates that we can do more for this community by working together in partnership than any one of us could do alone," says Marc Barbeau, vice president for Institutional Advancement at Northland College. "This fund will have a positive impact in this community for generations to come."
