Northland College appoints new Biology and Natural Resources faculty member
April 4, 2011
Northland College has named Katie Stumpf to a tenure track faculty appointment as an assistant professor of Biology and Natural Resources beginning Fall 2011.
“I have wanted to teach at Northland since I first heard about the College from a former student when I was 21 years old,” says Stumpf. “The academic environment at Northland is the perfect place to tackle important conservation issues by conducting research in collaboration with local agencies and also by encouraging undergraduates to get involved in research and outreach both in and beyond the classroom.”
Stumpf graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Zoology and Biological Aspects of Conservation and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Biology at Northern Arizona University. Stumpf joins Northland from the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy, where she teaches as a National Science Foundation GK-12 Graduate Fellow. Her recent research has focused on the ecology and evolution of riparian birds.
“Katie demonstrates a passion for ecology and teaching,” says search committee Chair and Professor of Biology Andy Goyke. “Her work on the ecology and conservation of birds is a good fit for Northland and should be attractive and fruitful for student research. She has a track record of working well with private and governmental agencies, and will find a wealth of potential partnerships in the Chequamegon Bay region.”
At Northland, Stumpf will contribute to the Biology and Natural Resources majors, offering courses in field ornithology, vertebrate physiology, animal behavior among other areas of study.
