Extreme storm chaser, meteorologist Reed Timmer to visit Northland College
March 21, 2011
Extreme storm chaser, Discovery Channel personality and meteorologist Reed Timmer will visit Northland College on Saturday, March 26 to discuss his work on severe weather forecasting, safety and survival. The event, to be held in the Alvord Theater beginning at 1:30 p.m., highlights Northland’s redesigned Meteorology/Atmospheric Sciences program and is free and open to the public.
Prior to the presentation, the public is invited to view Timmer’s specialized tornado intercept vehicle, the storm research vehicle (SRV) Dominator. The SRV Dominator is a heavily customized, armored SUV that is able to withstand wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, allowing Timmer and his team to collect data from areas of severe weather previously inaccessible to researchers. The viewing and demonstration of the SRV Dominator will take place from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. outside the Kendrigan Gymnasium.
Recognized as one of the world’s most respected experts on severe weather forecasting, Timmer is CEO of Weather Fusion, LLC and Extreme Tornado Tours, LCC and has starred on two Discovery Channel programs, including “Storm Chasers” and “When Nature Strikes.” Originally from western Michigan, Timmer is currently working on his Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma.
