Students in history competition eligible for $5,000 scholarships
November 5, 2010
ASHLAND, Wis. - High school students who write about history may find their future a little brighter with a $5,000 scholarship to Northland College. The scholarship is the newest enhancement in a joint Northland College and The ECHO history writing competition that is open to all Wisconsin high school students.
The competition seeks student-written articles that explore one or more areas of the state's history. Areas of study may include communities, families, schools or any other topic that is of historical significance.
A committee composed of members of The ECHO staff and Kevin Schanning, Ph.D., Northland College associate professor of sociology, will evaluate submissions and select outstanding articles for inclusion in future editions of the newspaper. High school students whose articles are selected for inclusion will gain statewide exposure and will be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship to Northland College in recognition of their accomplishment.
"Because we think it is important for high school students to start developing the research and writing skills they will need successfully to perform college level work, we want to offer this extra incentive," said Rick J. Smith, Northland's vice president of enrollment management. "Every student who enters this contest will be eligible for the one year scholarship."
To learn more about the contest and scholarship, high school students may call the Northland College Office of Admissions at (800) 753-1840 or visit northland.edu/wi-history.
