Forbes names Northland College to America's Green list

ASHLAND, Wis. - Northland College's curriculum and environmental commitment has once again earned national attention, this time by inclusion on a new list of green higher education leaders.  In a Nov. 11 article in Forbes "American's Greenest Colleges and Universities" reporter Brian Winfield writes, "For the last 39 years Northland College in Ashland, Wis., has given its liberal arts curriculum an environmental twist. Students can enroll in courses of study focused on sustainable agriculture, man's connections with nature, or the Lake Superior watershed (which includes a one-month trip around the watershed itself)."

Forbes made the selections based on a report card from the Sustainable Endowments Institute and other factors, including whether an institution is included in the Princeton Review's Green Honor Roll.  Northland College was included in this list in August when it was also named to Sierra magazine's Cool Schools list.

"The growing interest in liberal arts education concerned with the environment and sustainability can be seen in the increasing number of recognitions and lists devoted to all matters green," said Michael A. Miller, president of Northland College.  "I hope that the faculty, staff, and alumni who were part of the process to adopt Northland's environmental mission back in 1971 take satisfaction in seeing how their conclusions were correct and their actions important to this college as we once again find ourselves identified as national leaders in an area of expanding significance to prospective students and our society."

In the Forbes article, the founder and executive director of the Sustainable Endowments Institute, Mark Orlowski, is quoted, "Schools are increasingly aware that if they want to attract the best students, they need to show a commitment to sustainability."

"As we continue to build on the strengths of our unique educational experience, we are constantly considering how related topics that seem critical to long-term sustainable and healthy living could be incorporated, as well," added Miller.
