Northland College, City of Ashland commemorate Arbor Day
October 25, 2010
Northland College President Michael A. Miller and City of Ashland Mayor Bill Whalen today commemorated Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting along Ellis Avenue on the Northland Campus. Both the College and the city have received recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation for their commitment to campus and urban forestry.
President Miller spoke of the long partnership between the city and the College, beginning in 2003 with the development of the city’s Urban Forestry Management Plan. Support for the development of the plan came from a $25,000 Department of Natural Resources grant administered by the College.
“The partnership between the College and city has been an exceptional opportunity for Northland students,” President Miller said, “enabling them to work directly with natural resources professionals to develop management plans and public policy while providing a vital service to the Ashland community.”
Mayor Whalen read a proclamation declaring October 25 Arbor Day in the City of Ashland. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of urban forestry, noting the economic, environmental, and social benefits of trees.
“Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic viability of business areas, and beautify our community,” he said, adding, “wherever they are planted, they provide a source of joy and spiritual renewal.”
In 2006, the Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council recognized the College and the city with a Long Term Partnership Award for progress made in furthering urban forestry in the City of Ashland.
Northland College is one of just 38 Tree Campus USA schools while the City of Ashland is one of 3400 Tree City USA communities nationwide. The National Arbor Day Foundation recognizes colleges and communities in the United States that demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship and promoting healthy urban forests.
