STAR Day Camp at Northland College offers youth outdoor adventures
June 29, 2012
Teacher Rick Erickson lay on a bed of nails while student Oakley Doering uses a sledgehammer to break a cinder block on his chest on Wednesday, June 27. Erickson lay on a plank of nails and held one over his chest as students took turns standing on it. Part of the "Science. Technology. Arts & Recreation" (STAR) Day Camp at Northland College, experiments and activities like these demonstrations of dissipated force help students learn about scientific concepts through hands-on experience. STARS is an outdoor adventure-based day camp for students going into 6th, 7th and 8th grade in the Chequamegon Bay area. The theme for this year's program was "Get Out and Play in Your Big Backyard!" Students took part in other activities, such as pop-bottle rockets, egg drops, outdoor adventures, cultural awareness about Ojibwe arts and language, interactive cooking demonstrations, and a wide variety of physical activities. For more information about next year's STAR Day Camp, contact Katrina Werchouski, Coordinator for Multicultural Programs at Northland College, by calling (715) 682-1344.
