Northland College to offer new forestry program for Natural Resources majors
May 15, 2012
Northland College will unveil a forestry program this fall for students interested in pursuing a Natural Resources major. In the past, students have been able to choose between programs that focus on ecological restoration or fisheries and wildlife ecology.
The forestry program in the Natural Resources Department at Northland College will include new course offerings, including Sustainable Forest Management, Forest Mensuration and Fire Ecology & Management. Forest Mensuration covers the measurement of volume, growth and development of individual trees and stands, as well as the various products obtained from them.
"Northland College has one of the nation's premier forests in its backyard," says Andrew Goyke, professor of biology at Northland. "It's only fitting given Northland's emphasis on experiential learning and demonstrated commitment to the environment, as well as its proximity to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, that the college provide a forestry program for Natural Resources majors."
The Natural Resources Department at Northland College provides students with the skills necessary to use, protect, and enhance natural resources. The department offers students a liberal arts education along with ecological, economic, regulatory, and management foundations. Students learn to evaluate the needs and demands of natural resources and the groups that interact with them. The department incorporates experiential learning from field activities, group work, planning and budget preparation and data analysis. Students who pursue Natural Resources majors often go on to graduate school or careers in the tribal, nonprofit, public and private sectors.
