Northland student wins first-place award from Intercollegiate Broadcasting System
March 9, 2012
Northland College junior Amber Mullen has won a first-place award for radio news coverage of local reaction to the Penn State sex abuse scandal from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. Mullen reported news stories for Northland College radio station 97.7 WRNC-LP during a writing internship last fall at the college. Mullen won first-place in the category "Best Campus News Coverage" for her story "Penn State Scandal Prompts Review," which covered Northland's review of its reporting policy.
"When the Penn State story broke, Mullen volunteered a news piece covering Northland's reaction to a scandal that shocked and reminded schools everywhere of the need for reporting incidents of sexual assault," says Danielle Kaeding, WRNC Station Manager. "Other students may have been daunted by the challenge, but Mullen willingly pursued the opportunity."
Cynthia Belmont, Associate Professor of English at Northland and Mullen's writing instructor, celebrated news of the award.
"The English and writing faculty at Northland are so proud of Amber and her fantastic achievement!" said Belmont. "We're grateful to Danielle for working with the writing program to arrange this internship."
The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System is a nonprofit education corporation that offers service and support for more than 1,000 member high school and college radio stations, as well as webcasters, across the globe. Mullen competed for "Best Campus News Coverage" against radio stations at other finalist schools such as the University of Tennessee-Martin, DePaul University, Kings College and William Paterson University.
