Northland College radio station WRNC now available for streaming on smart phones
January 13, 2012
Is there an app for that? You bet. Northland College radio station 97.7 WRNC-LP can now be streamed from a variety of smart phones, including the iPhone, Droid and Blackberry. WRNC listeners and iPhone users may tune in using the Public Radio Player application from the Public Radio Exchange. In addition, other smart phone users may tune into the Internet stream of the station's mix of progressive talk, news and music through the TuneIn Radio application.
"These applications offer smart phone users another platform through which they may conveniently tune to 97.7 WRNC," says Danielle Kaeding, station manager of WRNC. "It is more important now than ever before that radio diversify the ways in which it provides relevant programming to maintain and grow audiences in an increasingly digital age."
Of 1,753 people who responded to a 2010 Arbitron national telephone survey, 92 percent reported that they use or own an AM/FM radio. At the same time, 54 percent of participants in the consumer research company's survey reported cellphones as having a "big impact" on their lives with local AM/FM radio lagging behind at 22 percent.
"If people see newer technologies like the smartphone (like the iPhone or BlackBerry) as having an impact on their lives that they appreciate, that may imply a warning to broadcast radio," states the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism in its 2011 State of the News Media report. "If those newer technologies can provide audio content beyond AM and FM, people may embrace them."
Those seeking more information about how to stream WRNC using a smart phone may contact Danielle Kaeding at (715) 682-1664. Listeners may stream WRNC anytime online at www.wrnclp.org.
