At Northland College I enjoy my students, the music, academic freedom (lots of latitude to try new things), and my colleagues. Our music students benefit from our liberal arts/environmental emphasis, rapport between students and faculty, our unique setting, and probably some aspects of the program itself. Without my mother’s stubborn insistence that, at age 12, I join the band and learn an instrument, I might not be researching the broad phenomenon of diaspora and the elements of isolation and sense of alienation in the artists and arts. Outside of my work at Northland College I enjoy tennis, fishing, varied reading, travel, and songwriting, although I am attempting to treat the latter more professionally than vocationally at this point.
