WRNC is owned and operated by Northland College. It is funded, in part, by funds allotted each year from the Communications Commission. Comm Comm is a student organization that receives funding through student fees to oversee student media at Northland, received the permit to build the station in 2003, and began broadcasting in May 2005.

WRNC broadcasts 24 hours a day and provides a variety of music, talk, and news programming for the Chequamegon Bay. Broadcasting at 100 watts, WRNC covers the campus community. Listeners can tune in while on the road within a 15-mile radius around Ashland.
