Lake Superior Day - July 22, 2012
Lake Superior Day is held on the third Sunday in July each year and celebrates this wonderful body of water.
Why was this day organized?
Although Lake Superior is the cleanest of the five Great Lakes, it too is being threatened by pollution, poisoned fish, invasive species, loss of habitat, and impacts from human development. This special day reminds us how important the lake and its surrounding land is to our weather, health, food and water supply, recreation opportunities, economy, and lifestyles. Lake Superior Day is a time to highlight the many ways we use the lake every day and find ways to protect it.
How can I celebrate the day?
People celebrate in many ways. Photographers and visual artists have special galleries and displays of their artwork. Writers have read stories and poems at festivals and bookstores. Communities have sponsored festivals, boat cruises, special kayaking trips. Clergy in the faith community have offered special water blessings, sermons, and prayers. Families fly kites, have a picnic, pick up litter at a favorite beach. What you do is up to you!
Visit our web site for ideas for how you can celebrate or to see events calendars from previous years.
Where do I get more information?
The Lake Superior Binational Forum promotes this event and publishes an events calendar, a list of celebration ideas, and articles about events and lake issues on its website. The Forum keeps a record of what is happening in communities, businesses, community groups, schools, and First Nations/Tribes in Ontairo, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
