The 2011 College Guide by Washington Monthly lists Northland College among the top 250 liberal arts colleges in the United States. The magazine says it attempt to offer an alternative to other college guides by evaluating schools' contribution to the public good in the categories of social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). Community Forum: Modern Mining in Northern Wisconsin

The forum panel consists of Bob Kincaid, mining activist from the Coal River Mountain Project of West Virginia, Bad River Tribal Chair Mike Wiggins, Jr., Jessica Koski, Keweenaw Bay mining specialist, moderated by Mark Anderson, SOEI Director.

The Penokee Hills Education Project is sponsoring a mining panel discussion that will be hosted at Northland College on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The event will be held in the Alvord Theatre and feature panelist Bob Kincaid. Kincaid is a 9th-Generation Appalachian, son of a coal miner, and human rights activist. He will be talking about his community's experience with modern mining on Dec. 6.
Living in the heart of Appalachia, Kincaid has first-hand experience with the health impacts that resulted from modern mining in the mountains above his home. Kincaid talks about the prevalence of cancer deaths and birth defects there.
The panel will also feature Jessica Koski, Keeweenaw Bay Indian Community Mining Specialist and Bad River Chairman Mike Wiggins, Jr. The event is free and open to the public. SOEI Director Mark Peterson will moderate the discussion.
