Ed-venture: Bow and Arrow Making Class

Ed-venture: Bow and Arrow Making Class

March 6, 2010

Location Information
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. November 14 & 21, and two Saturdays in March (dates To Be Announced) @ Northland College Maxwell Property

In this comprehensive, four-day class, participants will learn how to make and shoot their own traditional wooden longbow and arrows. No previous wood working or archery experience is necessary. We will start by harvesting a live tree, then split, hew, carve, and scrape the wood into working bows. We will also make traditional Flemish style bow strings. For the arrows we will gather wooden shoots, then scrape, straighten, nock, point, and fletch them with feathers.

The class will be carried out over the course of two semesters to allow the wood time to season between sessions. Once the bows and arrows are done we will practice shooting them.  From harvesting to shooting, everything you need to know will be covered.  The class will be held on Northland College’s Maxwell Property (7 miles from Ashland). Transportation from campus will be provided. Most of the class will occur in an indoor heated space, but we will be harvesting materials outside, so come prepared to hike and work in wet and cold conditions. Tools will be provided, but please bring a sharp knife and hatchet if you have them. Also bring a breakfast/lunch, water bottle, and any snacks or beverages you want.

Instructor: Kelly Hargesheimer

Maximum participants: 4

Registration Fee- students: $35 includes all tools, materials, instruction, transportation, & snacks

faculty/staff: $70

Non-Northland: $140

Ed-venture: Bow and Arrow Making Class

Mar 6, 2010
