Beach Grooming and Sanitary Surveys Project

Through beach cleaning and sanitary surveys, this project was designed to improve human health and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to beaches around Chequamegon Bay.

In 2011 and 2012, researchers at the Red Cliff Natural Resources division monitored pathogen levels at four beaches while Bad River Natural Resources Department monitored pathogens at five beaches. Teams of Northland College students monitored 13 beaches and 10 storm water outfalls.

Students then cleaned and groomed 18 beaches to reduce human exposure to pathogens. Project leaders are evaluating results to determine the effectiveness of the beach cleaning and develop ways to continue the program.
