Environmental Chemistry Major

Environmental Chemistry provides an interdisciplinary experience for students that is based on chemical analysis. Throughout the chemistry curriculum, students apply advanced instrumentation—such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry, gas chromatography with mass spectroscopic detection, high performance liquid chromatography with varied detection, including fluorescence and ultraviolet absorption, ion chromatography, and molecular spectroscopy—to measure real environmental samples. In addition students learn how to apply classical techniques to natural and synthetic samples in order to characterize the world around us. In the classroom, students develop a sound theoretical basis for understanding a wide range of important processes ranging from atmospheric deposition to the fate and transport of environmental pollutants and from green synthetic chemistry to the biochemical mechanisms of toxicity.

Coursework in geology, biology, mathematics, and physics provides context and preparation for application of chemistry to the interdisciplinary issues inherent in the study of environmental issues. Northland’s hands on approach, advanced instrumentation, and laboratory facilities offer students a challenging and exciting educational environment. Small class size and individualized instruction from committed enthusiastic professors encourage student learning and provide Northland students with a highly interactive college experience.

Environmental chemistry majors are prepared for sophisticated technical careers and for graduate studies in a variety of fields. Graduates are also able to bring their technical expertise to bear on issues of public policy. Graduates who choose to earn a law degree or Master of Public Administration will have competitive advantage in these fields due to the broad scientific background provided through the Environmental Chemistry Program.
