Profile
Ever since the first semester of my freshman year of college I have known that I want to teach at a small liberal arts school. I really value the small school atmosphere and the opportunity to get to know my students. Northland is a great fit for me because it allows me to combine teaching with my passion for the environment. I try to tie every class I teach to the environment in some way through water, air, and soil. I am fortunate to be able to teach a wide variety of classes that allow me to investigate different aspects of the environment. For instance, I teach a couple of atmospheric science classes as well as the Chemistry of Natural Waters that investigates the water quality of the region. Finally, my interest in food and agriculture has developed while teaching The Chemistry of Food in the Growing Connections program.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family and love introducing my two young daughters to the outdoors. I am particularly passionate about sea kayaking, cross country skiing, and biking.
Research
One of my main research interests is in the area of curriculum development. I am working with faculty from several other colleges to write a workbook that will help faculty use an active approach to teaching general chemistry in the context of interesting environmental and societal problems. I am thrilled that W.W. Norton has committed to publish our book.
I also enjoy working with students and off-campus organizations to study environmental issues in the region. In particular, I've worked with the Wisconsin DNR and the Bad River Tribe in studying air quality in the Chequamegon Bay region. I've also worked with the Bad River Watershed Association and the National Park Service to study local issues of water quality.
