Academic Advising

Building relationships with faculty and staff are among the most important experiences in your college education. In recognition of this, all fulltime faculty and selected staff members serve as academic advisors. During your first year, you will be assigned to an academic advisor based on your anticipated major, your schedule of courses, or your interests.  We take great care in choosing your first academic advisor. New students have an opportunity to first meet with their academic advisor during Orientation. Beyond the first year, you can change advisors to better fit your changing interests and needs.

Quality advising is critical to making the most of your experiences while at Northland. Advising in an ongoing process of helping you clarify and evaluate your academic plans and goals. Your advisor assists you with course selection each semester, creating and updating your four year academic plan, and sharing information about potential pre-professional experiences like internships, special training and certifications, and research opportunities.

The Office of Student Life works with academic advisors to register incoming students prior to their arrival for orientation each semester. Once you have been accepted and paid your enrollment deposit, you will work with an advisor in person or over the phone to create a schedule of courses for your first semester. We will provide you with the needed registration materials including the timetable of courses so that you can best be prepared for your first advising meeting. If you have questions about academic advising, please feel free to contact the Office of Student Life at studentlife@northland.edu.
