Profile
Since September 1, 2010, Rick J. Smith has served as Vice President for Enrollment Management at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. In this role Rick is responsible for recruitment of new entering freshmen and transfer students, financial aid and retention of currently enrolled students.
In a higher education career spanning more than 30 years, Rick has held positions as a Vice President and Dean at three different four-year private colleges and universities and a large suburban two-year community college.
Rick's portfolio responsibilities in these positions have been many and varied. He has designed and successfully implemented a one-stop student service shop involving financial aid, student accounts, registration, records and advising. He's also had responsibilities for marketing, branding, global education, institutional research, Total Quality Management rollouts, website development, new campus location development, multicultural services and numerous other major initiatives throughout his career.
During the course of his career, Rick has also served as the Vice President of the Minnesota Private College Council, Fund and Research Foundation, a voluntary consortium of 17 Minnesota private colleges and universities. He has also been a successful consultant for a broad range of national and regional two- and four-year public and private colleges and universities around the United States and held numerous voluntary positions with community and non-profit organizations.
Rick is a graduate of Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he received a B.A. degree with majors in Political Science, English and American Studies. He has also taken graduate course work at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and The University of Chicago Graduate (now Booth) School of Business in Chicago, Illinois.
