Timber Wolf Alliance, a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, promotes and assists natural resources managers with achieving a sustainable population of wolves.  This is accomplished through public education in the western Great Lakes region, with special emphasis on the Lake Superior basin.

Timber Wolf Alliance is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in 2007. Check out our anniversary merchandise and help us celebrate 20 years of educating the public of the western Great Lakes region about gray wolves.

Timber Wolf Alliance promotes strategies that enhance wolf populations and teach people about the wolf's role as an integral part of a healthy woodland ecosystem.

The program also coordinates educational activities, provides training to volunteers, and hosts scientific workshops. The Alliance maintains resources for school teachers, scout leaders, naturalists, and others and supports a reward fund to aid in the arrest and prosecution of people who illegally kill wolves in Wisconsin and Michigan.

The Department of Interior has announced the removal of the population of gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region, including Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota from the federal endangered and threatened species list.
Recovery goals outlined in the region’s recovery plan have been met and exceeded, making the western Great Lakes wolf population one of the more robust population in the lower 48 states. This is a milestone in the natural recovery of the wolf to our region, and public acceptance and understanding has played a pivotal part. Timber Wolf Alliance celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2007, and this announcement of wolf delisting is a validation of TWA’s hard work over the past 2 decades. TWA’s work is not over however, and as the western Great Lake States take the lead in managing wolf populations, understanding wolves will be even more paramount in learning to share the landscape with this member of our natural community.
