Many parents often ask questions about their role as a Northland parent, and also questions pertaining to their student's new life as a Northland College student. Below is a list of frequently asked questions about Northland.
A. While tuition and room and board are the majority of your child's expenses, there are a few other things that you should be aware of. Your child can expect expenses from buying books for all his or her classes. Additionally, there are the costs for laundry facilities which are $1.25 per load to wash and $1.25 per load to dry. Also keep in mind any traveling expenses your family may incur when visiting one another.
Northland College is The Environmental Liberal Arts College. This idea stems back to the Romans where the oldest sense of liberal education was an education for a free man. Since the free man tended to be a person of independent wealth, a liberal education didn’t need to be an education for a specific job. It was thought to be either the education necessary to being a good citizen or the education necessary to having a well-trained mind. We have adopted this idea of a liberal arts education with an environmental emphasis in that we teach our students to become agents of change. Educated within their major, students also have the foundation of our liberal arts requirements which helps them apply the use of environmental ethics to just about everything. We believe our environmental liberal arts background will indeed prepare your child for whatever their future holds by not only giving them specific skills related to their major, but also giving them the confidence to go through life using their skills obtained while receiving their environmental liberal arts education.
Our recent statistics show that 95% of Northland graduates seeking employment within their major found it within 6 months of graduation. Furthermore, 30% of Northland graduates go on to graduate school.
A. While Northland does not have an active police officer on campus, we do have a very close relationship with the Ashland Police Department who frequently patrol our campus throughout the day. Furthermore, we do have our own campus security that patrols campus 24/7 to ensure our students are safe. These security officers are available to help with issues and to help escort students safely across campus. Also, we do always suggest that your Northlander abides by a "buddy system" we do realize that this is not always possible, and if your child does feel uncomfortable walking alone, he or she can also call their RA to walk them to and from campus buildings.
A. While Northland's sticker price is much higher than public school tuition, we do have the funds to offer a significant amount of aid to students. Annually, Northland offers over 4.5 million dollars in financial aid and scholarships to its students. We encourage students to sign up for the free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) to see what federal aid they are eligible for. Furthermore, Northland offers a significant amount of need based grants, as well as academic and merit scholarships, and work study programs. Click here for more information on financial aid and scholarships that Northland offers.
A. FAFSA is the free application for federal student aid. Parents and students are encouraged to fill this out after January 1st of the student's senior year, and then renew the form each following year. The FAFSA form uses numbers from your taxes to calculate a number that they think the parents can afford to contribute to their child's tuition each year. Using that number, Northland can award need based grants and work study to help pay for institutional costs. To learn more about FAFSA, go to the US Department of Education Free Application For Federal Student Aid Website.
A. There is a no tolerance drug policy on campus. Furthermore, Northland is a "dry campus" which means we do not allow open containers of alcohol on campus anywhere except in an enclosed dorm room. Northland abides by all state and federal laws regarding the use tobacco and alcohol products, and only persons of legal age can use/consume these products. Also, all Northland buildings are tobacco free buildings. For an extensive listing of all drug and alcohol policies please refer to the student handbook.
