Introduction to Housing

Residence hall living is part of the living and learning experience at Northland College. It provides an environment that is conducive to personal growth and an opportunity to develop a sense of community with student peers, as well as develop individual maturity and responsibility. The Residential Life Office is dedicated to promoting a healthy living and learning environment for all students. Upper-class students are hired to serve as Residence Hall Directors and Resident Advisors. Northland College requires all freshmen and sophomores to live on campus. Exemptions are granted for married students, students from the greater Ashland area who are living with their parents, Armed Forces veterans, or students who turn 21 years of age prior to September of the academic year for which they are enrolled. Questions regarding exemption eligibility should be addressed to the Director of Residential Life.

All Residence Halls have

  • a kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, etc)
  • card-operated laundry facilities
  • study and TV lounges
  • a separate computer lab

All Rooms have

  • available cable TV hook-ups
  • telephone (equipped with voice mail) for direct-dial campus access and free local calls
  • computer network connection service for access to email, the internet, etc.
  • a bed, mattress, dresser, desk and chair, closet, shelving, and curtains. (Linens are not provided. You'll need extra-long twin size bedding for an 80" x 36" mattress.)

Room Styles

All residence halls feature double rooms. While Memorial Hall is the only building with specifically-designed single rooms, some doubles in every hall may be used as singles (meaning: it's a double room, but only one person lives in it). However, single rooms cannot be guaranteed.

The MELLC also offers double rooms with a semi-private bath and apartments, though the apartments require an additional application process (see: ELLC Apartments) and generally consist of second-year (and beyond) students. The approximate room sizes are: 12' x 12' (Mead), 13' x 11' (McMillan and Fenega), 15' x 16' (ELLC), and 12' x 14' (Memorial doubles).

Things you Should Know About Housing

When you check out it is your responsibility to leave your room in the same condition as it was when you checked in.

Pets are prohibited - except aquarium fish.

Appliances: A kitchen is provided in each residence hall for the preparation of light snacks and occasional meals. Use of electrical appliances for cooking in residence hall rooms which require grease and/or an open flame are not permitted. Generally acceptable appliances include: popcorn poppers, microwaves. (Microwave ovens and refrigerators are provided in each residence hall kitchen.)

Insurance: If you are not covered by a property insurance policy, we encourage you to invest in a low-cost policy which insures personal belongings in the residence halls. Information is available in the Office of Residential Life.

Linens: We don't provide a linen service. When you purchase bedding, you will want extra-long twin-size bedding. (Our mattress size is 80" x 36".)
