Ashland’s newest radio station will begin broadcasting May 26. To launch WRNC, host of Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman will participate in a gala event at Northland College in the Kendrigan Gym, Saturday, May 28. The event starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the door for $10 general admission and $5 for students.
The fundraiser includes a presentation by Amy Goodman. She will show her documentary, “Media in a Time of War”, and sign copies of her latest book. Amy Goodman hosts and produces Democracy Now!, a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program which airs on over 300 stations in North America. Goodman has covered U.S. foreign policy and reported for Pacifica in Mexico, Haiti and Indonesia. She is a recipient of a 1999 George Polk award for her work on Drilling & Killing. Most recently she co-authored the national best seller The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media that Love Them with her brother David Goodman.
Headlining the music for the evening is national artist Peter Mayer, singer and songwriter of songs for a small planet. The event begins with Minnesota Folk Festival New Folk Songwriting Contest Winner, Sara Thomsen. Doors will open at 7 to the music of local musician Dave McCormick and his bluegrass group, the Moonshine Rounders.
WRNC, We R Northland College, can be heard on 97.7 FM. The station is Northland’s newest student initiative and will mainly feature local independent artists. To start, the station will generally be on the air in the evenings and mornings Monday thru Friday. As programming develops, WOJB Public Affairs Director Eric Schubring will produce his morning show from the college.
The event is sponsored by WOJB and Northland College Communications Commission. Communications Commission is a student-run organization and is responsible for the operation of the campus communication media.
