Northland’s Director of Food Services gets regular phone calls from other campuses asking how to make their selections more environmentally savvy. Northland’s cafeteria boasts vegan and vegetarian options, sustainably harvested seafood, and organic and fair-trade choices. The dining service provides free, reusable mugs, offering discounts on drinks if the mugs are used. Work-study students compost food scraps from the cafeteria and the residence halls, saving 8,000 pounds of material annually from the landfill. The compost is used in the campus garden, where students grow food for the Outdoor Orientation trips, our "Everybody Party," and the Thanksgiving Feast.

• Northland's food provider, The Compass Group, has announced that it will use only cage-free eggs. Following their recent move to provide seafood that’s sustainably harvested, this new decision goes a long way for animal rights. Click here to learn more about this topic.
• Environmental Council has formed a committee working to put organic food labels on cafeteria foods! They will be working with Jeff Spangenberg and cafeteria workers to look up recipes, track down ingredients, talk to distributors, and get some stickers on organic products. If you're interested in joining the committee come to the next Environmental Council meeting on Monday at 4:30, or contact Allison Mills.
• Join your fellow students on March 27th from 10:30 to 12:30 in the Alvord Theater for the 2008 Food Summit! There will be an overview on budgeting for organic and local foods followed by a discussion on how to get more on campus. If you want to see more organic and local food on campus, apply!
