Northland College awards over $5 million dollars each year in scholarships to students who could not otherwise afford the liberal arts education program. Studies have shown that students who receive scholarships are more likely to excel in their academic and professional careers, and are more likely to give financial gifts in turn to others in the future. Whether it is a large endowment, or a smaller annual contribution, giving towards a scholarship fulfills a personal mission of many Northland donors.
In 2006, Dr. Carol Blum, M.D. and her husband Steve Wilson endowed a Northland College scholarship to honor Carol’s parents, Allen and Josephine Blum. Carol’s personal mission to endow a scholarship was inspired by her parents’ experiences.
“My parents grew up in Depression-era rural Nebraska,” Carol said, “My father graduated from high school at age 16 from a one-room school.”
He joined the Air Force where he completed a college equivalency degree and received the Distinguished Flying Cross award during WWII. With only a high school education, Carol’s mother rose from a part time salesperson to assistant personnel manager for the Sears & Roebuck Company. Carol’s parents felt their careers were limited by the lack of formal college education despite their lifetime achievements. The Blum Scholarship supports students in reaching their full potential with financial support for a Northland College education.
