The Northland FYE

Join other new students as you spend the first semester together exploring what it means to be a part of the Northland College community. The FYE, which is required of all first-year students (and some transfer students), is an innovative experience dedicated to helping new students like you succeed at Northland.

The Northland FYE officially begins when you arrive on campus for your Outdoor Orientation trip.  Your FYE group will be comprised of the same students on your OO trip with the addition of an upper-class student tutor who serves as the Teaching Assistant (TAs).  The TAs are there to familiarize you with both the college and community resources that will help you succeed. During the FYE, you'll learn about college life and have fun participating in a variety of events on campus and in the local community.  Not only will the course help you thrive at Northland, we will help you to explore what it means to be a “liberally-educated” person.

Course topics and activities include:

• Making Healthy Choices
• Trips into the local community
• Examining Difference 
• Exploring Career options
• Finding Meaning and Purpose
• Community Service in the Chequamegon Bay area

Examples of previous Community Service trips:

• Volunteer for PumpkinFest, AppleFest, and the Whistlestop Festival
• Assist local growers with fall harvest
• Help producers prepare for maple syruping
• Assist the elderly by volunteering with a local service organization, Faith In Action
• Bell ring for the Salvation Army
• Assist growers with sustainable food production
• Help with Special Olympics events
• Serve a meal to honor our elders
• Help maintain local playground structures
• Assist with beach clean-up sponsored by the National Park Service

The FYE meets twice a week for the first half of the semester.  One class meeting is dedicated to learning about Northland and the other is designed to help you get involved in campus life.  This experience is like no other and we looking forward to helping you fully explore all the opportunities available at Northland.
