Center for Ethical Leadership

The overarching mission of the Center for Ethical Leadership is to create an environment and resources for students to understand the principles and practices of ethically guiding the work of others toward a common goal.

Level I

Goal – To build awareness of self and others and become an engaged learner through participatory leadership practice in the classroom and residential communities.

Areas for exploration:

  • Communication (active listening...)
  • Conflict resolution
  • Assertiveness skills (plus passive, aggressive styles...)
  • Problem solving
  • Leadership style (I.D. strengths, weaknesses) to become a continual learner
  • Accountability to self
  • What is leadership?

Level II

Goal – To learn and develop effective participation experiences within a group and become aspiring leaders on and off campus.

Areas for Exploration:

  • How to set group goals
  • Knowledge of Northland College resources & how to use (i.e. vans, getting funds, etc.)
  • Accountability to peers
  • Give/receive constructive feedback
  • Promoting/marketing event(s)/Project management
  • Systems theory
  • Setting timelines
  • Followership
  • Group effectiveness and Leadership models
  • Needs assessments
  • Collaborative decision making & networking
  • Leadership and ethical constructs for groups

Level III

Goal -- To practice elements of ethical leadership through a leadership role in campus group(s) and mentor first level leaders.

Areas for Exploration:

  • How to adapt to change
  • Accountability to service
  • Developing others
  • Able to teach to peers
  • Creativity
  • Empowering others to lead
  • Understanding motivation (i.e. employees, volunteers...)
  • Service components of leadership (leading towards the groups goals and working for your "membership")
  • Understanding ethics of power
  • Model of problem solving & evaluation of individual and group performance

Level IV

Goal – To establish mentors in a chosen field and apply leadership skills in arenas inside and outside the College.

Areas for Exploration:

  • Identify personal leadership capacities and interests
  • Create a leadership capstone experience
