Running Windows Update is a necessity for Windows users. You can set your computer to run the updates automatically. Windows XP users can review the instructions for setting their computer to update by clicking here.
Symantec Anti-Virus is provided free to Northland College students, faculty, and staff. You must have a Northland College user logon and password to use this. At the prompt type in the word domain before your login., i.e., DOMAIN\smithj01.
Spybot is a free program for cleaning spyware off of a computer. It runs in a manner similar to an antivirus, and will block "bad" sites that can pollute your computer with advertisements, as well as "immunize" your system. As with all spyware, be certain to review what Spybot is deleting, as some items it detects as malicious spyware are actually normal and desirable (in particular, look for titles in found "spyware" that are names of programs you have installed and trust, or belong to northland.edu).
Ad-Aware is also available as a free program for personal computers. It runs in a manner similar to an antivirus, but will not block sites or immunize your computer like Spybot.
