Jill's Upset Eagles and Will Play for UMAC Title

November 3

Box Score

Fourth seeded Northland College knocked off top-seeded and host Northwestern College 16-30, 16-30, 30-15, 30-18 and 15-12 to reserve a spot in the 2007 UMAC Championship game.

After losing twice to the Eagles earlier in the season, the Jill's improved to 17-17 overall.  Northwestern's season ends with a 21-11 record.  Northland will face Bethany Lutheran College at 8:00 PM after the Vikings beat St. Scholastica 3-2 in the other semifinal.

After losing the first two games the way they did, probably no one would have thought Northland would eventually go on and win.

In the first game, the Jill's had eight attack errors and finished with a -.044 attack percentage.  Game two was much of the same as the LumberJills committed ten errors and wound up with a -.022 hitting percentage.  By comparison, the Eagles 14 kills and hit .167 in game one and had 19 kills and compiled a robust .405 attack percentage.

Game three and four were a complete reversal for both teams.  Northland committed just four errors in the two games and ended up with 25 kills.  The Eagles, after committing just ten errors in the first two games, doubled that number in the middle two games.  After struggling with their attack percentage in the first two games, Northland hit over .300 in games three and four.

The old saying is that you save the best for last and both teams brought that to the table in the deciding fifth game.  The Jill's led from the start but could not pull away but held on for the three-point win.

Sarah Hank (LeSueur, MN) led the Jill's with 15 kills while Melissa Anderson (Brooklyn Park, MN), Laura Fisher (Green Bay, WI), Chelsea Lundgren (Crosby, MN) and Carrie Canfield (Florence, WI) all each finished with seven apiece.  Setter Courtney Kinney (Ashland, WI)added a team-high 38 assists.  Miranda Reichert (Mosinee, WI) had a team-high 17 digs, with Melissa Anderson, Hank and Kinney had 14 and 13 respectively.
