Box Score vs Simmons College Game 1

The Northland LumberJills softball team earned two wins yesterday in Florida after going 0-4 at the Finlandia Dome Tournament this past weekend.  On Friday, the LumberJills fell to Concordia University of Wisconsin in their season opener 11-2 and to Finlandia 10-0.  On Saturday, UW-Oshkosh scored a 6-1 win over the LumberJills and Marian notched a 12-4 victory at the Superior Dome in Marquette, MI.

The team was plagued by a lack of hitting and errors that led to unearned runs.  "The story of our weekend was frustration,"  said Northland coach Steve Wammter.  "We believed we would be a strong hitting team, but we just didn't hit well, and we didn't hit well in the clutch.  We didn't field the ball either.  If you can't hit or field, it doesn't leave many options."

Northland got off to a positive  start in the opening doubleheader in Florida sweeping Simmon College 8-7 and 4-3.  "We played better," said Wammer. "We were able to get the bats going a little bit and we were able to find ways to win, which is what good teams do."

Trailing 2-1 after the first inning, the Jills got a grand-slam home run from Karen Harnisch in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead before Simmons rallied to to take the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the second.  Northland score the tying run in the third and the go ahead runs in the sixth when Melissa Grego and Tiffany Datko singled putting runners on first and third.  Harnisch followed with an RBI single that scored Grego with Datko scoring two batters later to give the Jills an 8-6 lead.  Northland ended the game with a double play to preserve their 8-7 victory.  Natalie Anderson got the win

In the second game, Northland jumped out to a 3-0 lead with RBI singles by Harnisch and Katie Zaban in the first and an RBI single by Becky Walters in the third.  Simmons tied the game with one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.  Alex Potter tripled in the sixth and pinch runner Brittany Schmitt scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson.  Schmitt got the win while Potter was 2 for 3.

Northland returns to action today when it faces Felician College and Susquahannah.
