Three Jills Earn All-Conference Softball Honors

May 10, 2005

Pitcher Leah Moder (Jr., Superior, WI) was named to the UMAC Softball All-Conference First Team while teammates Alicia Homola (Jr., Gilbert, MN) and Katie Zaban (Fr., Frankfort, IL) were named to the second team.

Leah Moder finished the season as one of the top pitchers in the conference. She had a team-best 2.95 ERA and threw two shutouts, including a one-hitter in the NAIA Regional Play-in Series. Moder finished 13 of her 18 starts on the season, and pitched a total of 109 innings. She allowed 115 hits (opponent's batting average of .259) and 40 walks while striking out 69 batters. Moder fought off a bought of tendonitis early in the year to lead the LumberJills to a second-place finish in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and a playoff berth, as the Jills finished 6-2 in the last two weeks of conference play.

Katie Zaban was one of only three freshmen named to the All-Conference Team. She led Northland in several categories, including batting average (.355), hits (43), runs batted in (24), on-base percentage (.415), and slugging percentage (.512). She also was one of the team leaders in extra bases as she was second in doubles with six, second in triples with two, and second in homeruns with three. Zaban played primarily right field for the Jills, but also was able to back up the infield positions if needed.

Alicia Homola anchored the team's defense at the centerfield position. In addition to All-Conference, Homola was also one of five players, and the only outfielder, to be named to the UMAC Softball All-Defensive Team. Homola batted .257 for the Jills and had 29 hits on the season. Homola's speed was evident in her statistics as she led the team in doubles (8) and triples (4) and was second on the team with six stolen bases. Homola also was second on the team with 21 runs batted in.
