Seventh Inning Fireworks Not Enough as Jill's Season Ends

May 5, 2007

Box Score

After Northland scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Presentation scored one in the eighth to win 8-7 in an elimination game in the UMAC Tourney at St. Scholastica.

The Saints scored two runs on two hits in the first inning off Jill's ace Brittany Schmitt (Abbotsford, WI).  In the fourth, Northland's Becky Walters (Porterfield, WI) doubled to left to score Tiffany Datko (Inver Grove Heights, MN), who led-off with a triple to cut the lead to 2-1.

Presentation (14-21) added one run in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Datko began the sixth inning with a double and then advanced to third on Katie Zaben's (Frankfort, IL) single to center.  A Presentation error allowed Datko to score and cut the deficit to 7-2 heading into the seventh.

Two quick outs gave the Jill's little hope they would get back in the game.  But a string of five consecutive hits changed all that.  With two outs, senior Mel Grego (Houghton, MI) hit a homerun to left to make the score 7-3.  Datko, Zaben and Walter each singled to bring the tying run to the plate in Bobi Jo Wolf (Marquette, MI).  The leading homerun hitter on the season was exactly what hitter Northland wanted to represent the tying run.  The sophomore first baseman belted a dramatic game tying grand slam to left to culminate the improbable comeback.  The exuberation the Jill's felt did not last long as Presentation looked to avenge yesterday's 5-4 loss to Northland.

In the top of the eighth, Jen Bourdon’s lead-off triple and an RBI single from Meghan Schmidt would once again put Presentation ahead.  In the bottom half of the eighth, Northland was not able to duplicate the heroics they did in the previous inning.

The LumberJill's finished the season with a 23-19 overall record and were 11-3 in the UMAC, which gave them the second place standing.  Presentation went on to face St. Scholastica in the championship game and lost 6-0.
