Defense stumbles in loss to Spartans

March 4

Box Score

Northland College committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs in a 6-2 loss to the University of Dubuque on day two of the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, AZ.

The Spartans went up 1-0 in the second inning and added three more in the fifth.  None of the runs in the fifth were earned as two LumberJills' errors turned costly and put Northland in a 4-0 hole.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Jills came back with two runs on three hits.  With one out, Tiffany Datko doubled and then scored on Katie Zaben's run-scoring single.  Karen Harnisch then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on Becky Walters single.  The ball was misplayed by Dubuque's centerfielder, which allowed both runners to advance another base.  One final defensive mishap by the Spartans, this one a wild pitch, allowed Harnisch to score and make the score 4-2.  Dubuque added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on three hits.

Zaben and Harnisch each went 2-4 for the Jills with Aurora Albrecht getting one of the other seven base hits.  Brittany Schmitt went the distance allowing nine hits, six runs and striking out seven in seven innings of work.
