LumberJacks snap skid with win over Golden Eagles

February 15

Box Score

Nick Matson scored two goals while seven other Northland College skaters found the net in a 8-6 win over the University of Minnesota-Crookston.

With the win, the Jack's halted a nine-game losing streak to improve to 4-20 overall and 4-15 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association.  The LumberJacks had not won since they won two in a row over the UM-Crookston back on January 11th and 12th.  The Golden Eagles lost their fifth in a row to fall to 5-19 and 4-15 in the MCHA.

Sophomore Jeff Diehl (Dacula, GA) started it off for Northland as he scored his third goal of the season 4:34 into the first period.  UM-Crookston stormed back with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead.  Matson (Hanover, MN) tied the score with his team-leading ninth goal with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period.  That goal sparked the Jack's to their biggest scoring output of the season in the second period.

Sophomore Pat Sierocinski (Quakertown, PA) scored his first collegiate goal 6:21 into the second.  The Golden Eagles made it 4-3 just 26 seconds later, but the LumberJacks would get the two-goal lead back as Matson added his second goal of the game at the 8:52 mark.  A little more than midway through, UM-Crookston scored again to once again pull within one at 5-4.  The end of the second period was nothing short of spectacular for Northland.  They scored three goals in the final 40 seconds of the period as Joe Belanger (Ashland, WI), Tony Huberty (Hermantown, MN) and Zach Kozak (Mesa, AZ) all found the net.

UM-Crookston made it 7-5 as they kept the scoring frenzy going only 42 seconds into the third period.  For the next ten-plus minutes, neither team was scored until Rick Delecke (Rochester, MI) added his fourth goal of the season at the 11:02 mark to give Northland a commanding three-goal lead.

Both teams wrap up the regular season this afternoon as they face-off at 4:30 PM at the Crookston Civic Center.
