Northland snaps skid with win over Martin Luther

January 26

Box Score

Northland College ended a six-game losing streak as Jordan Arneson scored 14 points to pace three Jack's in double figures in a 72-65 win over visiting Martin Luther College.

Dylan Ring scored 11 points and hauled
down eight rebounds

In last night's loss to Bethany Lutheran, Northland limped out of the gate and to put themselves in an early hole.  This evening, Joey Brennan (Ashland, WI) helped the Jack's get out and running early on as he scored four points to propel Northland to a 6-0 lead just 2:16 into the game.

The Knights were finally able to get going as they would outscore the LumberJacks 10-2 over the next 3:05 to take a 10-8 lead.  They would eventually take a 18-14 lead after a Caleb Free three-pointer with 7:47 left, but Northland closed the half strong as they held Martin Luther scoreless and scored 11 consecutive points to take a 25-18 halftime lead.

Ryan Cannata drains a three from the corner

In the second half, Northland (3-13, 1-6 UMAC) was also to eliminate the slow start they had yesterday.  After the Knights scored the first basket, the Jack's went on a modest 6-2 spurt to increase their lead to 31-22 with less than two minutes into the second half.  Martin Luther closed the gap to 38-34 with 13;00 left, but the Jack's prevented a season-long trend of being unable to withstand runs by their opponents.  Instead, the LumberJacks seized control of the game by outscoring the Knights 14-4 over the next 4:22 to take a 52-38 lead with less than nine minutes remaining.

Lloyd Kalfs was 3-3 from the field and 2-2
from the free-throw line

Martin Luther (4-12, 2-5 UMAC) had one final surge in them as they were able to pull within 61-56 with 2:54 left in the game.  Northland withstood the rally as they made nine free-throws down the stretch to win their first conference game of the year.

Ryan Cannata (Nashwauk, MN) and Dylan Ring (Eau Claire, WI) joined Arneson in double digits as they added 11 points apiece.  Although the Jack's shot just 40.8% from the field, they more than made up from it at the free-throw line as they connected on 28-37 (75.7%).

Northland will bounce out of conference on Tuesday, January 29th as they travel to Finlandia University for a 5:30 PM (EST) start.
