Cougars score season-high in win over Jack's

February 16

Box Score

The University of Minnesota-Morris shot 50.7% from the floor and were 14-31 from beyond the arc as they scored a season-high in points with a 101-71 win over visiting Northland College.

The Cougars improved to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in the Upper MIdwest Athletic Conference.  The Jack's fell to 3-21 and 1-12 in the UMAC.

It was a torrid start for both teams early on as UM-Morris had a 11-10 lead just two and a half minutes into the game.  The Cougars kept up their pace and stopped Northland in the tune of a 10-0 spurt over the next 1:28 to take a 21-10 lead just over four minutes in.

Trailing 30-17 with 12:10 left, Northland fought back as they outscored UM-Morris 13-4 thanks in large part to Zeb Woiak's (Nekoosa, WI) eight points to pull within 34-30 with 7:26 to go in the half.  Not to be outdone, the Cougars responded with a backbreaking 8-0 run that the LumberJacks would be unable to recover from.  UM-Morris led 42-30 after the run with 6:15 left and would settle for a 51-39 halftime lead.

Any hope Northland may have had going into the second half may have been dashed as UM-Morris hit a three on the opening possession to begin a string of seven straight points to start the half.  The LumberJacks got no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

Woiak had his best offensive game of his young career as he scored a career-best 24 points on 8-10 from the field and was also 8-9 from the free-throw line.  Jordan Arneson (Madison, WI) added 18 points in the loss.  Overall, the Jack's shot well from the field as they connected on 24-54 (44.4%) and were 17-22 from the line.

Northland travels to the College of St. Scholastica on Tuesday, February 19th for its season finale.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM.
