WPI muscles past Northland

Worcester Polytechnic Institute limited Northland College to just three hits in a 9-1 win in game one and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 12-6 in game two on the second day of the Russ Matt Invitational in Port Charlotte, FL.

The LumberJacks scored their only run of the game in the first inning.  Bryce Szymanski started things off with a single to center.  After a flyout, he advanced to second on a balk and then stole third.  Matt Tanneberg lined a double to left center to score Szymanski and give the Jacks an early lead.

The Engineers took control of the game by scoring six runs off of just two hits in the third inning.  WPI was also helped with three hit by pitches and a Northland error to take a 6-1 lead.  They then added single runs in the next three innings while holding the Jacks at bay.  After two hits in the first inning, Northland could only manage a fourth inning single by Michael Cross.

In game two, Northland once again started off strong.  With one out, Mike Stevens and Matt Tanneberg wrapped consecutive doubles.  Tanneberg advanced to third on an infield single by Cody CarrollChris Steiner's single through the left side plated Tanneberg to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.  Michael Cross then walked to load the bases for Corey Stibbe.  Stibbe hit a grounder to short and narrowly beat out the inning ending double play to enable Carroll to score and give Northland a 3-0 lead.

WPI (4-2) came back in the bottom of the first with four runs on six hits.  The LumberJacks matched their output the inning before as they strung together four hits to score three more runs.

Casey Frantz led off with a single to center and then stole second.  Bryce Szymanski moved him to third as he singled to right.  After a popout, Tanneberg walked to load the bases.  Carroll gave tied the game at 4-4 with a run-scoring single to right.  After another popout, Cross delivered a two-strike two-run single to center to give Northland (1-4) a 6-4 lead.

The Engineers tied the game once again with two in the second and took the lead for good with a single run in the third.  WPI took a 8-6 lead with one in the fifth and blew the game open with a four-run six.

Northland collected nine hits with Carroll and Steiner each having two.
