Northland Falls One Run Short Against Northwestern

April 20, 2007

Box Score

Sam Overlien outdueled Brad Schoenman as Northwestern College edged Northland College 2-1 at LumberJack Field this afternoon.

Overlien went the distance, allowing eight hits while striking out a season-high 12.  He also did not walk a batter.  Schoenman (Longmont, CO) also threw a complete game, allowing just five hits, one earned run and fanned five.

The Eagles (15-12, 5-6 UMAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the second after Lee Nelson's double plated Peter Cameron from first.

The LumberJacks (4-12, 3-4 UMAC) tied the score in the bottom half of the second.  Cody Carroll (Shawano, WI) and Chris Panabaker (Wiggins, CO) each singled.  After a strikeout, Andy Finco (Hibbing, MN) singled to right to bring home Carroll.

Northwestern scored the eventual game-winning run in the third.  With one out, Tom Tadych walked and then stole second.  Tyler Sage then hit a ball to right that Jack's outfielder Michael Cross lost in the sun.  With runners on second and third, Spencer Labatt hit a sacrifice fly to Cross that scored Tadych and gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Northland had runners on second and third with just one out, but was unable to score.

In the sixth, the LumberJacks tried to mount another rally.  Mike Stevens (Cadillac, MI) was hit by a pitch to lead off and then stole second.  Matt Tanneberg (Kennewick, WA) singled sharply through the left side to Eagles leftfielder Ryan Long.  Long threw a strike to Cameron at home to nail Stevens trying to tie the game.

In the ninth, Northland had another chance.  Overlien hit Cross to lead off the inning.  Finco sacrificed him to second and then advanced to third on a Sam Ferraro (Fox River Grove, IL) groundout.  Casey Frantz (Charlotte, MI) hit a sharp groundball to short that Jason Freemont fielded and threw Frantz out at first to end the game

The two teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM.
