April 30Game 1 box scoreGame 2 box scoreGame 3 box scoreNorthland College pounded out 38 hits on a very blustery afternoon in Morris, MN as they cruised past the University of Minnesota-Morris winning a rare tripleheader 4-2, 14-0 and 9-5.With the wins, the LumberJacks improved to 7-12 overall and 5-5 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Cougars dropped to 9-21 and 4-11 in the UMAC.In game one, the Jacks rode the pitching of Will Opdyk and timely hitting from Bryce Szymanski on their way to the 4-2 win.On a day that consistently featured 30 plus mile per hour winds blowing straight in, the Jacks put together their best offensive performance of the season. In the third inning, Mike Stevens signled through the right side and moved to thrid on Matt Tanneberg's double to right. Cody Carroll then delivered a run-scoring single to right to plate Stevens and move Tanneberg to third. After a strikeout, Chuck Breitenfeldt's groundout to second with the infield playing in scored Tanneberg to give the Jacks an early 2-0 lead.Opdyk cruised through the first three innings as he retired all nine batters he faced. After a strikeout to begin the fourth, a misplay on a foul pop-up allowed the Cougars another out. A hit by pitch and two singles followed the error and loaded the bases with one out. The LumberJacks had a chance to escape the inning, but the throw to first on a double play ball enabled two unearned runs to score and tie the game.In the sixth, Chad Moore started the inning with an infield single. Szymanksi then stepped up to the plate and blasted a ball straight into the wind down the right field line that just carried over the fence to give Northland a 4-2 lead. Opdyk was able to work around two singles in the bottom of the seventh to earn his third win of the season. He allowed just six hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Tanneberg, Carroll and Moore each had two hits to lead the ten-hit attack.In game two the Jack's had four players collect three or more hits, while Bryce Szymanski and Alex Tsomaya combined on a five-hitter as the Jacks roughed up the Cougars 14-0.The Jacks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with four hits in the first inning, as Szymanski and Stevens had back to back singles to lead off the game. After the first four Jacks reached base Chris Steiner hit a two-run single with Cross adding a RBI single to give Northland a 4-0 lead. Moore's RBI groundout capped the inning.Jack's added another run in the thrid with and run-scoring single by Breitenfeldt plated Cross, who lead off the inning with a double.Northland made it 9-0 in the fourth, Stevens lead off with a single, Tanneberg reached on a fielders choice Carroll then doubled, Streinner then struck again with yet another two run single, Cross then doubled to plate Steiner as thr run-scoring continued.Jacks tacked on two more in the fifth making the score 11-0. After the loading the bases, the Cougars pitcher threw two wild pitches scoring Teadt and Stevens.Northland made it 14-0 in the seventh as the first four Jacks reached base including a double by Cross and a single by Steiner. Two more runs came across on wild pitches.Cross lead the 18-hit assault going 4-5 with thre doubles while Szymanski, Stevens, and Steiner all had three hits a piece. Steiner also had four runs batted in.With the help of six errors by the Cougars and the hitting of Cross and pitching of Szymanski and Opdyk, the Jacks won 9-5 in game three.Cougars jumped out to and early 1-0 lead after scoring one in the first as Northland went down in order.The Jacks finally scored in the third tacking on three runs. Szymanski hit a triple with one out and was plated by Stevens who reached on an error, and later scored on an error. Cross came threw with an RBI single scoring Tanneberg, who walked. Minnesota-Morris responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, on three hits.In the fifth, the Jacks exploded for four runs on five hits. Tanneberg, Carroll, Steiner, and Cross all hit consecutive singles, after Breitenfeldt grounded out, Moore hit an RBI single. The Cougars responded with a run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth.In the sixth, Steiner hit a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cross then plated Steiner with a single. The Cougars threatened in the bottom half of the sixth, but were unable to score and left two men on.In the seventh, Moore lead off with a single and was plated by Stevens who hit a sacrifice fly. The Cougars went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as Will Opdyk threw two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save.
