In his playing career, Grice set his high school record for hits in a season as a senior.  In college, he was a two-year starter at Tacoma Community College (WA) in 1993-94 and earned All-NWAACC and All-Star honors as a shortstop in 1994.  He was among the team leaders in several offensive categories, including batting and on-base average, RBI's and stolen bases.  He concluded his playing career at Washington State University in 1995.  The Cougars won the Pac-10 North that season.

Grice received his Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting from Washington State University in 1996 and his Master's Degree in Business Management from Minot State University in 2002.
