Baseball

2007 marked a new era of Northland College LumberJack Baseball as Eric Grice was named the new Head Coach in July of 2006.

Matt Tanneberg hit .387 as a freshman
and was named 1st Team All-Conference

Last year was a successful season in terms of what the team was able to accomplish.  With just 17 players and only two returning starters from the previous season, the Jacks finished the regular season in fourth place and qualified for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason tournament.  After defeating #2 seeded Bethany Lutheran College, Northland lost in the semifinals and placed third.

The program looks to keep moving forward as they return eight starters and ten lettermen.  The LumberJacks had four All-Conference selections last year in sophomore first baseman Matt Tanneberg (.387 BA), senior second baseman Mike Stevens (.342 BA), junior shortstop Cody Carroll (.328 BA, 14 doubles) and sophomore pitcher Brad Schoenman (3.18 ERA in conference).  Other key offensive returners are senior first baseman/designated hitter Chuck Breitenfeldt (.316 BA), senior catcher Casey Frantz (.314 BA), freshman outfielders Michael Cross (.284 BA, three HR's) and Bryce Szymanski.  Senior outfielder Eric DeCaires also returns, while sophomore infielder Jeremy Snow is looking to recover from off-season shoulder surgery.

Sophomore Brad Schoenman looks to
lead a young pitching staff

The LumberJacks struggled last season pitching, but are hopeful with virtually the entire staff returning, 2008 will be much better.  Along with Schoenman, the team will hopefully have four quality starters in sophomore Tyler Teadt, and freshmen Will Opdyk and Alex Tsomaya.

Overall, the program is excited about taking the next step.  Although the team is very young, the 2008 season looks to be a good one for Northland Baseball.  The foundation has been set and now is the time to put the pieces together and put themselves into a position to compete for championships.
