On-Going Support & Capital Needs

The Northland College Athletic Program is in need of both capital support and on-going support to provide the type of facilities & support items necessary to maintain a sate-of-the-art athletic program.  Recent construction of the new baseball, softball, and intramural fields located on the east side of Ellis Avenue, as well as support items such as equipment, uniforms, recruitment travel expenses, facilities upgrades, etc., have led to the need for additional funds.

Much of the fund's personal success is directly attributable to Northland's past emphasis on the Business Curriculum.  This background has encouraged the opportunity to "give back" to the college.  The goal is for future alumni to continue to support the efforts in maintaining this emphasis.  In the future, direct funding will be provided to support increased emphasis on the Business Curriculum.

On-Going Support
Northland College has enriched its offerings of intercollegiate athletic opportunities following its membership to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division III.  Students can participate on varsity intercollegiate teams including:

Men's

Women's

  • Basketball
  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Soccer
  • Cross Country
  • Cross Country
  • Ice Hockey
  • Volleyball
  • Baseball
  • Softball
  • Skiing
  • Skiing

The intramural program offers opportunities for students to participate in 23 different sports on individual, team, and co-educational levels.

All of these programs require resources to maintain them and often require extra support because of special needs.  A gift for the on-going support of the program is as important as a gift for capital improvement.

The types of expenditures supported by this fund include but are not limited to:

  1. Recruitment of Student Athletes:  The college does have a recruitment budget but extra funding for recruitment provides coaches with an edge on other institutions.
  2. Equipment:  It would help the college to have
    • a baseball pitching machine with costs approximately $2,000,
    • a golf cart for the trainer which has a price tag of approximately $5,000,
    • collegiate benches and a collegiate table for soccer with an approximate cost of $4,000,
    • a portable outdoor sound system for soccer baseball, and softball games at a cost of $1,000.
    • and two high quality video cameras with a price tag of $1,000 a piece.
  3. Facility upgrades:  The athletic department is in need of a repair budget of $5,000 per year to help maintain health equipment that was purchased with funds raised by the Tiziani-Kountz golf outings and gifts raised by alumnus trustee John Allen.
  4. Miscellaneous funds:  For the purchase of team uniforms and other equipment needed to carry on the Intercollegiate Athletic Program.

Funds for our On-going Support Program will be raised primarily through our Stewardship Program; however, this program does not preclude the use of our Capital Pledge Card Program for contributions to the On-going Support Program.

Capital Improvement

With the addition of men's baseball, women's softball and increased intramural activities, the college undertook the construction of new facilities for the athletic program.  The total cost of the project was over $750,000.  Funds are needed to retire this debt.

The retirement of this debt will provide an opportunity to jump-start the capital fund raising efforts.  To being this effort the fields were named "The KFB Memorial Fields" and these naming rights will continue for major contributors, as well as recognition rights for all contributors.  This will raise the recognition factor of the fund, not only in the community, but for alumni as well.

Funds for the capital program will be raised through our Pledge Card Program which will be available shortly.  This is intended to have a three year payoff program available.
