Honors & Awards

The College presents awards and honors to students in recognition of academic merit and achievement. Many of these accomplishments are announced at the Honors Day Convocation held the first Thursday of April. Awards and honors are listed below.

Dean's List

The Dean's List is computed at the conclusion of the fall and winter sessions. Full-time students (students who complete 12 or more credits during each of fall and winter sessions) with letter grades in at least 12 credits, and who earn a 3.500 grade point average with no grade less than C and no Incompletes, merit this honor.

Major Merit Awards

Major Merit Awards such as the Religion and Philosophy Department Award, Native American Studies Award for Academic Excellence, and Physics and Meteorology Program Award are awarded to seniors upon nomination of the major coordinator. Eligibility for nomination is based on a minimum grade point average of 3.000 and significant contributions made to the major. Major coordinators may require the successful completion of an honors project or another compatible experience for students to be eligible for these awards.

Other Awards

Several other awards are conferred upon students on the basis of academic merit. Monetary awards often accompany these recognitions. In some cases, a check is presented at the Honors Convocation. In other instances, the award is applied to the following year's tuition.

Graduation with Honors

To be eligible for graduation with honors, a student must earn a minimum of 48 non-S/U-graded credits at Northland and have been enrolled at the College during his or her junior and senior years. The minimum requirement for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree is 124 credits of successfully completed course work with completion of one major and liberal education requirements.

A student will graduate with honors if he or she has attained an overall grade point average of 3.500 or higher. Students who earn a cumulative grade point average from 3.500 to 3.699 will graduate cum laude; students who earn an average from 3.700 to 3.899 will graduate magna cum laude; and students who earn an average of 3.900 or better will graduate summa cum laude.
